Chocolate Cherry Amaretto Milkshake Shots (slurps?)

Chocolate Cherry Amaretto Milkshake Shots (slurps?)

A while back (like a LONG while back) I was contacted by the friendly folks at Luna and Larry’s asking if I would be interested in doing a product review of their Coconut Bliss ice cream. Oh, man… was I ever!

I didn’t get to jump right on posting the review after I received my coupons in the mail, because I live in the middle of nowhere right now… and the middle of nowhere unfortunately does not carry Coconut Bliss ice cream. :(

But, the other day I located some about 30 minutes away from my house. Jackpot! We packed up the kiddies, drove to this tiny little heath food store jam packed with all kinds of goodies, and picked up three pints of Coconut Bliss ice cream. They only had a few flavors, so our options were limited. I was really sad that they didn’t have the Mint Galactica flavor. But, there were plenty of other enticing flavors… so we chose:

Dark Chocolate

Cherry Amaretto

Naked Almond Fudge

The first one we dug into was the Naked Almond Fudge. And, honestly,  I was a little put off (and dissapointed) at the fact that Naked Almond Fudge had little bits of shredded coconut in it. :P

I guess I assumed that “naked” meant no added flavors- or just “plain” or something… not shredded coconut woven throughout. I’m sure there was a description on the package or something that I ignored. With that said,  my hubs and I certainly managed to polish off the whole pint super fast. It reminded me of an “almond joy” candy bar… but I always hated those as a kid… so I’d  say it was much better than an almond joy.

The other flavors were more my style.

I really enjoyed the Dark Chocolate one that I purchased especially for my son- and that’s saying a lot because I am no fan of chocolate ice cream. I seriously could have eaten this all in one sitting.

The Cherry Amaretto was awesome too… and reminded me of this great flavor of ice cream my dad would buy when I was a kid, called Black Cherry. Looks just the same too… I would definitely buy this flavor again.

I can’t wait to try out their vanilla; I am definitely a vanilla kinda gal. With sprinkles, please.

I thought the flavor of the Cherry Amaretto would make a great milkshake… and  a touch of scotch or bourbon would make it EVEN better.  So, I came up with this “adults only” mini shake- and happily slurped one up after the photoshoot. All in the name of veganMoFo. ♥

You can leave the booze out of it and just drink the whole darned recipe by yourself. Then you’d just have a very tasty milkshake.  I guess, technically, you could do that with the alcoholic version as well, but I would hardly recommend it.

UPDATE: WINNER IS DEANNA!! Thank you all for participating! ♥

If any of you guys are interested in trying out the fabulous Luna and Larry’s Coconut Bliss ice cream, I happen to have one extra coupon for a free pint lying around… so leave a comment and I’ll randomly choose one lucky winner. I’ll close the contest by the end of the week (midnight Friday, November 5).

Open to all in any part of the world.

I’ve never tried coconut ice cream. Way too expensive. I would really love to though! Right now I am on a serious banana soft-serve kick. So good. I made chocolate coconut butter and it is great when mixed into the cuisinart with a frozen banana.

What a great idea – alcohol and coconut ice cream! Hmm, wonder how that would go over at t-giving dinner. It might make things a lot more fun!

  8. Lesley says:

Coupon or not, I am making that milkshake!!

  9. Sounds so delicious!

  10. I’m a chocoholic. My favorite CB flavors are Cherry Amaretto with Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge. I think for this smoothie I’d skip the booze and put in some chocloate. Yum.

  11. Elizabeth says:

I have never tried vegan ice cream, but I have recently had to give up dairy for health reasons and would LOVE to find an ice cream “substitute!” I really enjoy coconut in everything I have tried it in so far, so I think I would really like coconut ice cream. I really like that there is an alternative to soy! Thank you for the giveaway; I am crossing my fingers!

I definitely have to try your milkshake recipe. I have been wanting to try Coconut Bliss for a long time now, but haven’t had any extra money to splurge on decadent vegan desserts.

After reading your “review” per Coconut Bliss, I can’t imagine why they’d ask you for one. Very sophomoric and contradictory of itself! “I was put off by the bits of coconut”…”hubs and I certainly managed to polish off the whole pint super fast”…..”reminded me of an almond joy”…”I always hated those as a kid”. Gawd. Pick an opinion, any opinion and stick with it! Don’t know what made them think you were qualified to do a product review? …But, boy, you sure proved them wrong!

      hi April,
      What a nice comment!
I actually can’t speak as to why they asked me to do a “review”, but as always in my posts, I am honest. @LunaandLarrys also retweeted the post today on twitter…. so I don’t think they had any problem with it. I could be very wrong…. ?

I really enjoyed their ice cream, and mentioned a couple of times that I will be purchasing more- but I was “put off” by the fact that the “naked” was coconut laced, rather than as I assumed it to be… and I’m pretty sure I covered that in my post. Hate for readers to think from your comment that I’m being contradictory… if anything, possibly a little playful with my own expectations of the one single flavor I chose. I really am just not a huge fan of shredded coconut, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy their ice cream.

Thanks so much for your input….

    Yummy!
Amaretto’s one of my favs…while flying, it goes hand in hand with coffee & makes the whole anxiety of trip trip just melt away! …Yet, in a shake…now you’re getting down to business!
I live in Tucson, Arizona…home of the close to six months of near or over 100 degrees…& shakes are one answer to coping with the heat.
Health Food marts are within a bus ride.
Hmmm, my mind tastes Coconut Bliss : P ♥

    • Alyssa says:

I live in Tucson, too and the weather has been INSANE this year. I can’t believe it was still in the 90s today!
I couldn’t survive without ice cream here, that’s for sure.

  21. Mrs. B says:

I lOOOVE Coconut Bliss and would LOVVVE to win a coupon for some more. :O)

  22. Jody says:

Allyson! What a fantastic idea – pick me, pick me! I have easy access to Coconut Bliss and would be most appreciative of a free pint. I am a self-proclaimed ice cream addict and Coconut Bliss knocks all others out of the water. De-lish!

  23. Corinne says:

    ME WANT COCOBLISS!

  24. That milkshake looks AMAZING!!! YUM> I love coconut bliss! YUM

  25. That looks delicious! Thanks for taking one for the team (taking one for the MoFo?)!

    Two questions:
What was the ice cream to booze ratio in the shots? I think these would be awesome for a party!
Do you think rum or vodka would work? Brown liquors and I do not get along, unfortunately.

    • allyson says:

      Hi Becky!

      Ahhh, math!

Okay, so I am guessing, since I didn’t follow any recipe, but just made it to taste and then wrote down the measurements I used, that the ice cream to booze ratio is 8:1… but then the ratio of ice cream to non-dairy milk is 2:1…. this all going off of a 1 ounce shotglass.

And, I think rum sounds great in it! I am guessing that vodka would go well too, especially with the delicious Cherry Amaretto flavor added in.

I’d be so happy if I was at a party where these were served! I bet you throw killer get-togethers :)

  26. RachelBethany says:

I went on their website and decided I need a pint of chocolate hazelnut fudge ASAP. I imagine it to be like frozen nutella and so delicious. The cappuccino looks good too!

    I would love to try!

  33. Noelle says:

I would totally like to try this product. You had me at “cherry” :D

  34. I’m no fan of chocolate ice cream either. Now I’m curious. The vanilla is super tasty! And so was the cookies and cream, pre-gf days. I suppose that means I’ll have to create my own :) Thanks for sharing the (coconut) bliss!

    • allyson says:

just as a disclaimer, The Dark Chocolate still has that “chocolate ice cream” taste, if ya know what I mean… But the texture was incredible! I couldn’t stop eating it. Thanks for the note about the vanilla! Sounds like we have similar tastes… so I’ll def try and seek it out!

  35. Jessie says:

These look amazing! Now I want to try some Coconut Bliss! :)

  36. Dianne says:

Ooh, putting booze in milkshakes! Bully idea. I haven’t tried all the flavors of Luna & Larry yet, but I did enjoy the Cherry Amaretto. I was a little wary of the Naked Almond Fudge, but your description actually sounds quite good to me!

    • allyson says:

haha! great… I figured someone out there would think that sounded quite yummy! I probably would have appreciated it much more if I was expecting it! Ah, live and learn ;)

  37. Kat says:

milkshake looks yummy! I <3 coconut ice cream!

  38. Shellyfish says:

That all looks so tempting! I’m not a big icecream gal, but I would love to be able to buy some without having to make it myself! Yum!

(Don’t include me in the drawing – can’t get that good stuff around here, sigh.)

  39. Emily says:

I would to try some Coconut Bliss. Thanks so much for hosting the giveaway!

By the way, your photography is absolutely stunning.

  40. Rose says:

I love Coconut Bliss! My favorite flavor is the pineapple coconut one.

    Those slurps are cute!

  41. Vegyogini says:

Ooh, I would love to win that coupon! Thanks for the giveaway!

The “slurps” look really good. You’re so creative!

  42. Deanna says:

Watch out! The naked coconut flavor has the coconut bits, too. It’s one of the things I didn’t like about it, too. I haven’t tried the vanilla. I’ve had the chocolate hazelnut fudge, as well. But, that was bought as a choice for the other members of the family, who are much more into chocolate than me. I’m a vanilla girl (topped with my own toppings of the moment).

If you try the vanilla, be sure to report back!

(Oh, and your grown up shake sounds delicious!)

    • allyson says:

thanks for the tip! I think I may HAVE to try the vanilla, all this ice cream talk is making me crave it quite badly! ;)

  43. Nicole says:

Oh, yum! We just got Coconut Bliss in Canada recently, so I’d be down with trying out a pint with that extra coupon of yours :)

Also, I never would have thought the naked almond fudge would include coconut either…too bad.

  44. Rick says:

Love your honesty in the review, and creativity w/ the shots.

Please enter me in the drawing for the coupon! :)

  45. Nichole says:

Yum! I haven’t had a chance to try this brand yet, but their chocolate peanut butter or chocolate hazelnut fudge has my name written all over it!

  46. Fanny says:

I love this post! And hate it. I’m also in the middle of nowhere, but, my middle of nowhere is in the middle of the ocean. I can’t get ANY ice cream here. Your post didn’t make it easier.. Anyway, all of those flavours looks amazing.

  47. virtual.jess says:

I *just* noticed that my local Planet Organic started carrying this stuff and I would love to try some for free!! The Pineapple Coconut flavour excites me. In Edmonton, we really start eating ice cream when the snow comes- it’s a Canadian thing. There are ice creameries all over the place, but not a single one carries a vegan option!

  48. Kelly G. says:

Oooh, I would love to try this, though I’m afraid I might run into the same problem you had with access. The closest Whole Foods is an hour and a half south of us, one way! But it’s near our dachshund-kid’s dermatologist, so we’ll be down that way sooner or later :)
